The Town of Longmeadow initiated a municipal Recycling Program in 1979 in order to reduce the amount of trash which we dispose of, to:
  • Realize commensurate budget savings
  • Prevent pollution
  • Conserve natural resources
  • Realize environmental benefits

As of Wednesday July 1, 2015 the Town's waste and recycling collection firm changed from Republic Services (blue trucks) to Waste Management Company (Green Trucks). Waste Management Company is a very environmentally concerned and plans to strictly adhere to the Town's recycling collection rules. Glass, plastic, and metal containers must be rinsed of any residue prior to being put out curbside for collection. Plastic grocery bags, wading pools, etc. are not accepted for curbside collection. Cardboard pizza and pastry boxes, etc. must be free of any food residual.

Waste Management Company understands that delivery of contaminated recyclables to the Recycling Center (MRF) in Springfield is counter productive, as they cannot be processed properly by the sorting equipment and will need to be sent out for disposal.

Longmeadow has a great residential recycling program with terrific participation, we need to be a little more mindful of the details.

If you have any questions, please contact Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545 or the DPW at 567-3400.

Recycling Incentives

In 2006 Longmeadow began a mandatory Waste Reduction Program, which provides incentives to reduce trash and increase recycling.  Acting in concert with state mandates and federal guidelines, we are working to manage our trash through a comprehensive process involving curbside trash and recycling collection, operating a Recycling and Yard Waste Center, and by providing recycling information.
