The Longmeadow Grounds Maintenance Department is responsible for all landscape maintenance to town buildings, athletic fields, tennis and basketball courts, schools, parks, islands and conservation areas. The department is also responsible for maintaining all playgrounds and the pools at Bliss and Greenwood Park. Additionally, the department’s responsibility includes maintaining all the landscape equipment, irrigation systems, fence repairs, pruning of trees and shrubbery; aeration, seeding and fertilizing of turf grass; tree and shrub planting; leaf removal; snow removal and ice melting treatments of parking lots and sidewalks of the town properties.
Turf Grass Mowing
Turf grass mowing is a large under taking for the department. The department maintains by mowing and string trimming over 125 acres of turf grass and 35 islands in town.
Community Facility Maintenance
High school and park and recreation athletic field maintenance is another large part of the department’s list of tasks. The grounds associates layout and maintain all fields and courts for numerous sports:
- 21 baseball and softball fields
- 11 lacrosse fields
- 14 tennis courts
- 23 soccer fields
- 3 field hockey fields
- 3 football fields
- 1 cross country course
- High school track and field
